Why You Cry During Energy Healing (And Why It’s Healthy)

Have you ever started crying during Reiki or Integrated Energy Therapy… and had no idea why?

No clear memory. No dramatic thought.Just tears quietly falling while you’re lying on the table.

Many people apologize when it happens.

Please don’t.

Crying during Reiki or IET is not a sign that something is wrong.

It’s often a sign that something finally feels safe enough to release.

Why Tears Happen During Reiki and IET

Both Reiki and Integrated Energy Therapy work with the body’s subtle energy system.

Reiki supports nervous system regulation and energetic balance through gentle, intentional touch or hovering hands.

IET specifically works with clearing suppressed emotional imprints held in the body — what some refer to as cellular memory.

When your nervous system shifts from guarded to safe, your body may discharge stored emotion.

That discharge often comes through tears.

You aren’t “being emotional.”

You are regulating.

Emotions Don’t Just Live in the Mind

We often think emotions are thoughts.

But the body experiences emotion long before the mind can narrate it.

When we suppress grief, silence anger, override fear, or “stay strong” through hard seasons, the body adapts by holding tension.

This idea is explored in The Emotion Code, which discusses how trapped emotions may linger in the body long after the event has passed.

Whether you view this energetically or psychologically, the body keeps patterns.

Energy healing creates an environment where those patterns can soften.

What IET Specifically Addresses

Integrated Energy Therapy focuses on clearing what are called cellular memory imprints — emotional experiences that may have been stored during:

• Childhood conditioning

• Trauma or shock

• Chronic stress

• Relationship pain

• Long-term self-suppression

IET works intentionally with specific energy centers associated with emotional themes like guilt, abandonment, fear, resentment, or heartbreak.

When those areas are gently supported and the body senses safety, tears may surface — even if you don’t consciously remember the original event.

It’s not about reliving.

It’s about releasing.

What’s Actually Happening in the Nervous System?

During Reiki or IET:

• Breathing slows

• Muscles soften

• The body shifts out of fight-or-flight

• Guarded posture relaxes

When the nervous system moves toward parasympathetic regulation, the body may process stored emotion.

Sometimes it’s grief.Sometimes it’s relief.Sometimes it’s exhaustion leaving the system.

Crying can be the nervous system completing a stress cycle that was paused years ago.

“But I Didn’t Know I Was Holding Anything”

Many high-functioning, responsible adults don’t identify as carrying trauma.

They identify as strong.

But strength often means pushing through instead of processing.

In Eastern Body, Western Mind, Anodea Judith explains how emotional imprints can settle in different parts of the body and influence both physical and emotional health.

You don’t have to consciously remember an event for your body to have stored its impact.

Energy healing doesn’t create emotion.

It creates safety for integration.

What If You Don’t Cry?

Also completely normal.

Release doesn’t always look like tears.

It might look like:

• Feeling lighter

• Deep sleep afterward

• Clearer thinking

• Reduced tension

• A sense of quiet calm

The goal of Reiki or IET is not emotional display.

The goal is safety.

Tears are simply one possible expression of release.

Books That Explore Emotional Release & Energy Healing

If you want to explore this concept more deeply:

These books explore emotional imprints, energy systems, and the connection between psychology and the body.

If You’re Considering Reiki or IET

If you’re local, in-person Reiki and Integrated Energy Therapy sessions are designed to support nervous system regulation and emotional integration gently — without forcing anything to surface.

If you’re not local, distance sessions are available and can be just as supportive when intention and safety are present.

Crying during energy healing isn’t dramatic.

It’s often the body saying:

“I feel safe enough to let this go.”

And that is healthy.
